JP Morgan Chase has hired Stacey Friedman as general counsel, replacing current GC Steve Cutler, starting in 2016. From my perspective as a career counsel who often works with lawyers looking to move from law firms into corporations, here's what's most important from that announcement

So yes, it remains true that one of the smoothest, easiest, and best ways to move in-house from a law firm is to get hired by a client. You get the opportunity to learn their business model, partner with their leadership team and employees, and prove you can do the job. In short, use your work as outside counsel as an extended job interview. And of course, once inside, continue to build your relationship with key influencers.
